Journal Square – Journal Commons

Journal Commons is a historic rehabilitation and adaptive reuse that honors the former headquarters of regional news publication, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The interior of the original 1924 building is fully repurposed to provide 141 market-rate units with open kitchen concepts, quartz countertops, expansive windows, high ceilings, in-home washers and dryers and stainless-steel appliances. Amenities include a state-of-the-art rooftop lounge with outdoor deck, heated underground parking, a co-working café, game room, fitness studio and pet spa. Ground-floor commercial space exists within the building’s original lobby and the Sentinel’s former press room.

Journal Commons is the second project in the Journal Square block redevelopment, which received $1.7 million in loans from the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee to support environmental remediation. The project additionally received $1 million from the City of Milwaukee by means of a developer-financed tax incremental financing and 30.6% Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) participation. Journal Commons is a model for urban, historic rehabilitation and adaptive reuse, leveraging innovative, sustainable design to add social and economic value beyond the immediate neighborhood.
